Q. How can I get a referral for Radiology, Inc. services?
A.

In general, we prefer seeing you as a referral directly by your personal physician. However, patients can self-refer for the diagnostic studies of screening mammography, bone densitometry, as well as coronary artery calcium scoring. If you are interested in these studies, please call our office at Jefferson Medical Arts Building at 574-288-4486.

If you believe you are a candidate for one of the many services offered by our Interventional Radiologists, you can contact a radiology nurse at Memorial Hospital by calling 574-284-6566. Interventional Radiology consultations at Elkhart General Hospital can be obtained by calling a radiology nurse at 574-523-7845. Please see the descriptions and procedures offered by our Interventional Radiologists under the physicians prompter within our Web site.

Q. Are there new treatments other than surgery for painful varicose veins?
A. There is an existing new treatment for varicose veins related to venous insufficiency. Venous insufficiency is when the valves of the vein no longer work and allow blood to flow backward down the leg, creating varicose veins. Throughout the day, these veins become more and more distended, causing unsightly distention of these veins as well as pain, edema and leg fatigue.

With a new nonsurgical procedure performed by an interventional radiologist, a catheter can be inserted into the saphenous vein near the knee under ultrasound guidance. A special catheter delivers energy to the vein wall, causing the incompetent saphenous vein to close down and remain permanently closed. By doing this, the backward flow down the vein is prohibited. This causes the varicose veins to shrink and symptoms from these veins to dramatically improve. If you are interested in this procedure, please call the referral number for Interventional Radiology Services at Elkhart Hospital: 574-523-7845 or at Memorial Hospital of South Bend: 574-284-6559.
